These
days almost all desktop computer systems sold are of a high
enough specification to be able to access the Web. The computer
must then be connected to the web with the help of an Internet
Service Provider (ISP), i.e. a company that lets you use their
connection to the Web.
This is usually done via a special 'computer phone' called
a modem. This modem will allow you to dial-up an ISP to be
connected to the Internet. Most ISPs will provide the computer
programs (software) and support needed to connect your computer
to the Internet. Costs vary from zero to £20 each month,
though each ISP will provide a different level of service.
